Multi-award-winning photographer and documentary filmmaker Mahmoud Hawary was born in Aswan in 1988. In 2018, he founded together with his wife Humans of Upper Egypt. The project aims to document the traditions, customs and folk arts of people in Upper Egypt through photography and cinematography and change the stereotypical image of the Sa'idis, which is spread by the media.
Mahmoud Hawary is specialised in black and white photography, portrait photography and landscape photography. Why black and white photography? It removes any distraction of color and helps focus on the subject, the textures, shapes, patterns, shadows, contrasts and the composition. It is more emotive and often more dramatic and transports us to a different kind of world.
