A mosaic is a piece of art that is composed of many tiny regular or irregular pieces of coloured stone, glass or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar and covering a surface, to create a whole image or object. It has a long history, starting in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. Today's artisans and artists work with stone, ceramics, shells, art glass, mirrors, beads, and even odd items like doll parts, pearls, or photographs. While ancient mosaics tended to be architectural, modern mosaics are found covering everything. Items can be as small as an earring or as large as a house.
