Manal Mahdy was born in Alexandria. She has Nubian roots - her parents are from Aswan in Upper Egypt. Manal received a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Alexandria University in 1993, a Master's Degree in Fine Arts in 2013 and a Ph.D./Doctorate Degree in Fine Arts from the same university in 2017.

For her master’s and doctorate degrees at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Manal has specialised in mural painting. Since 2013, she has been working for the Fine Arts Sector of the Ministry of Culture. She has held many group exhibitions and artistic workshops in techniques like mural painting, mosaic, tempera, lead with stained glass, glass stuck on glass, melted wax painting, oil and watercolour painting.

Thanks to Manal's Nubian origin, she admires Primitive Art, Naïve Art and Folk Art, the colours of the earth and the soil, the natural upbringing. She loves to use the natural colours present in the environment, the colours used by primitive societies and ancient civilisations be it in caves or on ancient walls. She uses natural stones, gravel, pebbles, glass, oxides, marble, porcelain and clay to express her thoughts.
